종이책 프로젝트는 밝은 빛과 소리로 눈과 귀를 사로잡는 수많은 매력적인 미디어 속에서도 살아남아 그 자리를 지키고 있는 종이책에 대한 고민에서 시작되어, 종이책이라는 매체 자체를 탐구했습니다. 책은 무언가를 기록하고 전달하기 위해 종이에 인쇄되고 여러 장이 묶이면서 우리가 접하는 책의 형태로 이어지게 되었습니다. 이를 기반으로 종이책이라는 매체를 읽기 위한 ‘내용’, 실재하는 ‘사물’, 그리고 페이지를 넘기는 ‘행위’의 3단계로 정의하고 다시 종이책의 구조로 시각화했습니다.
The Paper Book project explores the essence of paper books, a medium that has survived among media filled with bright visuals and sound. Books take form through writing, printing and binding. Based on this understanding, the paper book is defined in three layers: the 'content' to read, the ‘object’ that exists, and the 'act' of turning pages. These layers are then visualized within the structure of this book itself.
책의 내용은 종이책을 만들고 읽는 과정에 대한 글과 일러스트로 채워져 있습니다. 정육면체로 제본된 책은 종이가 겹쳐지는 측면들까지 책의 물성을 보여주는 중요한 요소가 됩니다. 또한 4방향마다 서로 다른 인쇄 방식을 적용하고 모든 방향으로 펼쳐볼 수 있도록 제본해, 종이책이 단순히 내용을 담는 그릇을 넘어 경험이자 공간임을 제안합니다.
Filled with writings and illustrations on the lifecycle of a book, this book is bound in a cubic form, where the layered sides become a vital expression of its physical existence. By applying different printing methods to each of the four directions the book can be unfolded, it redefines the paper book as an experience and a space.
