“Map of the Origins of 25 Neighborhood Names in Seoul” is a poster series that visualizes the etymologies of 25 legal-neighborhoods’ within Seoul. Photographs capturing the present-day neighborhoods are overlaid with objects, events, or places from which each neighborhood name originates, and the two layers are stitched together with thread and needle. The project began from a desire to make the often intangible origins of place names perceptible, and to explore a form that combines graphic design with handcraft. First, based on research using Seoul Place Name Dictionary (2009) published by the Seoul Metropolitan History Compilation Committee, along with various reference materials, 25 neighborhoods were selected for visualization. Field research trips were then conducted to photograph each area, and the collected images were printed onto fabric. Over the following two weeks, lettering of the neighborhood names was designed, and during the next two weeks, graphics representing the objects, events, or places that form the origins of the names were created. The lettering was executed using machine embroidery, while the graphics and fabric were connected through hand embroidery completed by myself and my family.
